Crossing Uganda
In 2016, I attended Tuungane, a bimonthly meeting between the village heads of the province of Lubero, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In that year, the safest way to get there was to land in Kampala and drive across Uganda.
This trip allowed me to observe the surrounding environment that was gradually transforming, at first very slightly, then abruptly at the border with the DRC.
I started shooting from the window of the moving car. I used my camera’s swiveling screen; in this way I kept looking straight ahead as I shot sideways, in order to conceal with my subjects the fact that I was stealthily photographing them.
Despite this, many noticed the camera.
This technique began to give unexpected results, so much so that I continued to use it also in DRC, highlighting the fascinating differences between the two countries.
